I have been doing a lot of reading lately!!! And not just reading books but reading my bible! I have been working on some of my Cassandra Martin workbooks and I found this quote from her and I thought it pertained to this trip I am on! She says, “I can not begin to tell you the number of ways I have heard God’s whisper calling me to bow my heart once again before him. I have heard him calling through the words of a song, the voice of a friend, the questions from children. I have learned to listen to His lessons through my tears, while washing dishes and doing laundry, during times of illness and stress, quietness and peace. When my heart wanders too far from its focus on Him, He allows situations to develop in my life that force me to go to my knees and seek his face.” This quote hit me that being here in Africa is tough! It’s a lot of fun! But its rough! God is so amazing and I forget that he has such great love for us and we need to have that kind of love for each other! I pray everyone have an experience like this one! I am truly blessed and God is so good!!!!

Feeding!!!!!!
Well this week is going by so quickly!!!!! I started my feeding rotation and it is so much fun. We sing to the babies, stretch and do exercises with their arms and legs and then do some massage and stretches to their facial muscles to help stimulate their sucking muscles. Most of the babies enjoy being touched and stimulated and some babies are not too happy to have to use their muscles. I decided on the eight babies that needed the Dr. Brown’s bottles the most. I took the initial weights and then I will take their final weights and compare them to eight babies who did not receive the bottles with their initial and final weights. So hopefully my hypothesis will be correct that the babies with the Dr. Brown’s bottles will gain more weight than those with out the bottles. The scales that I weighed the babies today were in kilograms and so I will have to convert to pounds, so interesting how America is not on the metric system yet! The smallest baby I weighed had to be about 6 pounds and she is about 2 months old, and the biggest baby I weighed was 9 months old and only about 10 pounds! So very tiny! They started using the bottles and some babies are eating more and better (not spitting up!!!!) Yay!!! I will keep everyone updated on what my results yield!!!!

It sounds as if the bottles are already working, I hope it continues to go as well. Those poor tiny babies.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the quote, I think we can all relate to it.
Love and miss you, can't wait to read the next post!
Awesome Jillian! You will take back much more than you are giving and what a wonderful experience. Savor each & every moment since you will be home before you know it. Glad to hear Casandra Martin's words are encouraging you in Africa. Love that quote! Keep us posted on the outcome of your tests. Enjoy today!
ReplyDeleteI am able to comment today! This is really going to be an interesting project. I think that you will have to keep most things constant except for the feeding for all the babies. Weighing them in will also be important. Make sure it is always the same time of the day. Hopefully, all the babies will stay well during the trial with the bottles. I am interested to see if they grow in length as well. Too bad you don't have a medical technology student with you so you could monitor some blood work as well. (LOL) Poor little babies who could stick them with needles anyway. Sorry can't help the thought process.
